Experiencing pain is normal. It is supposed to be protective to make you stop doing things that may be dangerous. But chronic pain that has persisted for more than 3 months is no longer protective nor informative.

So, what can you do about chronic pain if you suffer from it?

Pain is created by your brain because your brain has decided that you are threatened and in danger and need protecting. You don’t even need tissue damage to feel pain. Even if you have tissue damage, sometimes pain persists long after the damage has healed.

Chronic pain is the second most common reason people see a doctor and miss work! Examples may be from headaches, joint pain, back pain, tendinitis, sinus pain, or carpal tunnel syndrome. With all these types of pain the actual feeling of pain is 100% of the time created in your brain. This means that by retraining your brain – you can actually stop the pain!

Some of the keys to retraining your brain are staying active – moving your body every day, even if it’s a short walk outside in nature, soaking up the sunshine. Other keys are to eat well, sleep well and stay positive.

The movement of your spine is also very important. Yoga, exercises and chiropractic all help with this. Chiropractic care improves the movement and function of your spine and this in turn helps your brain know more accurately what is going on in your spine and body. Research tells us that chiropractic care can help people with headaches and back pain.  This is most likely because chiropractic care helps your brain know more accurately what is going on in your spine and body and may help switch off feelings of pain, when they are no longer needed.
